Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) refer to the technology of microscopic devices, which can be merged into a nanotechnology and nanoelectromechanical systems. In Asia, they are referred to micromachines. They consist of components measuring between 1 and 100 micrometers. The components can be used in many applications such as sensor systems and in optical network. They are small in size and quite attractive. MEMS are easy to work with and allow systems to be miniaturized.
Since they are small, they can be used in applications whose development would not be possible without the MEMS. For instance MEMS are used to fabricate micromechanical switches used in communication circuits. The switches allow for signal switching and phase shifting at a speed that would not be easy to achieve if the macro-scale switches were to be used.
